Crevasse Rescue Training
Visiting a mountain region that has crevasses is an exciting thing to do and if you intend to venture onto crevasses it is essential to get some specific training in the techniques required to safely travel through this type of terrain. Each year many people venture off to the Alps for the first time or further afield to the greater ranges such as the Himalaya's and attempt to ascend glaciated mountains such as Mera Peak.
At Distant Horizons we are now offering technical training in the necessary skills at our new purpose built indoor training centre in the Lake District to give people the opportunity to learn a number of essential skills in a safe and controlled environment. Our centre has been expertly designed which allows us to simulate the different scenarios you may encounter whilst being on a crevasse and train you how to apply the necessary techniques to efficiently deal with any situation.
We have fittings that allow us to place ice screws and use ice axes as anchors to effect a crevasse haul system. We also have an elevated platform that provides us with the perfect set up for improvising hoisting techniques over a 90 degree angle. We are offering a 1 day course for groups of up to 8 people at our centre following a structured programme including:
- Photo presentation about glaciated regions
- Equipment used in glacier travel
- Tying in and using a rope for glacier travel
- How to hold a person that has fallen into a crevasse
- Anchor systems for setting up a hoisting system
- How to prussiking out of a crevasse using different kit
- Using a re-direct system
- Setting up simple & complex hoist systems.
In addition to the above we can also provide clients with training in simulated ice climbing training on our 'Drytooling' walls where crampons can be used on 2 routes. We are offering training in lead climbing on these walls where ice threads (Abalakov) anchor systems have been simulated into the block walls. Furthermore whilst leading you can place ice screws into the embedded ice screw threaded sleeves which we have installed with resin. Using this system in addition to the adjacent bolts you can learn how to coordinate your moves and hang whilst placing ice protection. This system we believe is the first of it's kind?
Perhaps it is not quite the real thing but it is perfect for understanding all of the techniques required and it gives people the opportunity to get some mileage whilst in a very safe and controlled environment - and at any time of the year!
