Kayaking & Biking Lake District

3 Lakes Challenge - Kayak & Bike

The 3 Lakes Challenge Event is one of our most popular events by far and groups repeatedly return to try and beat their record, therefore we wanted to offer groups a different dimension that would take the challenge to the next level.  Enter the bike!

On the original 3 Lakes Challenge groups travel between lakes via vehicle transport, however introducing bikes creates one continuous journey using the same route as the original challenge, but enabling groups to explore the beautiful winding roads of the Lake District in the open air.  The challenge is to paddle the 3 longest lakes in England - Coniston Water, Windermere, and Ullswater and bike in between.

THE ROUTE:

40km of kayaking and 37km of biking within a guide time of 14-16 hours

  • Start at Coniston village and paddle the length of the lake
  • Cycle from the Southern end of Coniston through the Crake valley to the Southern tip of Windermere
  • Paddle the length of Windermere
  • Bike from the Northern end of Windermere over Kirkstone Pass to Glenridding
  • Paddle Ullswater to finish at Pooley Bridge

Paddling by sea kayak

The Distant Horizons 3 Lakes Challenge event is unique in the fact that we use sea kayaks which are ideal for long distance open water journeys, especially on the larger lakes found in the Lake District National Park.  Sea kayaks are ideally suited to the 3 Lakes Challenge due to the boats speed capabilities and also the ease of handling in windy conditions, they are very efficient and ideally suited to novice and experienced paddlers alike.  If you have never paddled before don't worry as we provide a detailed session before getting on the water, giving everyone the chance to grasp the required techniques.

Come and see the Lake District from the best seats in the house - guaranteed.  Let us know your preferred dates and we will organise the rest.  For further details on our 3 Lakes Challenge Event please contact our office on 017684 86465.
