Start Training Now for our 3 Lakes Challenge!

5 Dec 2017 - Nick

Here at Distant Horizons, we’re passionate about helping people to push themselves and see them achieve what they thought they never could. Our 3 Lakes Challenge is one of our most popular events and kayaking through the three longest lakes in the UK, a total distance of 35km, in under 12 hours. Our 3 Lakes Challenge is chosen by a wide range of people, whether they want to test themselves, organise a team building exercise with a difference, or use it as a sponsorship challenge for charity. You’ll also find that the 3 Lakes Challenge offers a breathtaking and unique view of Coniston Water, Windermere and Ullswater.

Whilst you will need a good level of physical fitness, we use tandem sea kayaks for the 3 Lakes Challenge, which not only have greater speed capabilities, but are very easy to handle for both experienced kayakers and novices. We always provide an in depth briefing session to everyone about to go onto the water to familiarise everyone with the kayaking techniques, so you won’t need to worry even if you’ve never kayaked before.

How is the 3 Lakes Challenge completed?

Lasting around 12 hours and with a distance of 35km, the 3 Lakes Challenge will see you waking up early as we take you to Coniston village where you’ll start the challenge and kayak the entire length of Coniston Water.

Once you’ve completed the first lake, we’ll then drive you to the southern end of Windermere, where you’ll once again kayak the entire length of the lake to reach the northern point. You’ll then be taken to Glenridding and kayak the length of Ullswater, before finishing at Pooley Bridge.

If you want even more of a challenge, you can choose our 3 Lakes with Bikes or 3 Lakes Mammoth to push yourself to the limit of physical endurance.

We’ll make sure you’re well looked after when you embark on the 3 Lakes Challenge

Taking on the 3 Lakes Challenge is an exciting and adventurous time, and here at Distant Horizons, we love to see people succeed. That’s why when you embark on your challenge, our team of highly experienced and qualified sea kayak guides will give you an in depth evening briefing beforehand.

We’ll provide you with all the specialist kayaking clothing and equipment you need, as well as refreshments and catering throughout the day of the challenge and a technician providing vehicle support at all times. Finally, you’ll receive a photo memento and a 15% off discount at Cotswold Outdoor.

In addition to the per person event fee from £130+VAT, your group can choose to book accommodation in our self-catered lodge. Due to the intensity of the 3 Lakes Challenge, and its length, we would advise you stay in the Ullswater area the day before and after as well.

Our on-site accommodation can sleep up to 12 people, and is ideal if you want somewhere basic but comfortable to stay in preparation for your challenge event. If you’d prefer to stay off-site, we can help you to choose from a variety of different options, depending on the preferences of your group.

Want to complete the 3 Lakes Challenge as an individual?

Our challenge events, including our 3 Lakes Challenge, are generally arranged for private groups and tailored to their needs, but we understand that you may want to take part either on your own or with a friend.

If you don’t have a group but still want to take part in the 3 Lakes Challenge, please get in touch with us, and we’ll try to find a solution such as combining your challenge with that of a similar group, or helping to develop a kayaking challenge that will suit the needs and size of your group.

Whatever the reason you’ve decided to take on the 3 Lakes Challenge – for charity fundraising, a team building challenge with a difference, or you and your friends want to push your limits, you’ll find this is an exciting and unique alternative to the more standard hiking-based adventure challenges on offer. There is no better way to see the rugged beauty of the Lake District than from a kayak, and we’re sure that you’ll make some fantastic memories along the way.

The 3 Lakes Challenge is available from April to October, and we cater for groups of up to 20 people. You will need a good level of fitness to complete the 3 Lakes Challenge, and we suggest that you do cardio, strength exercises, as well as stretching to prepare for it properly.
