The last day of November showed us how great autumn in the Lake District can be as we kayaked, walked and abseiled our way around Ullswater in fantastic weather for a team building day. The Distant Horizons team packed up and shipped the tandem sea kayak fleet to Glenridding, at the southern end of Ullswater, where they were greeted by the enthusiastic (if not slightly nervous) managers from ENS, Electricity Network Solutions Ltd, who specialise in providing overhead power line solutions in the UK.
This event was designed to give the mangagement team a challenging team building day out of the office, and have some fun, but also for the managers to deal with physical activity in cold conditions. This would help them appreciate the environments their staff teams on the ground experience daily. With this in mind we decided that a hike up Sheffield Pike and a kayak journey on Ullswater, leading to an abseil, would give our clients the opportunity to be challenged physically and mentally whilst being rewarded by the beautiful Lake District landscape.
The team building group was split in two with one kayaking first and the other hiking, they would then swap around after a picnic lunch on the shore of Ullswater. It was a chilly start to the day as the kayakers set off across Ullswater and people soon experienced numb fingers and cold noses, however this did not slow us down as the group was lively and excited to be kayaking across a lake in beautiful crisp autumn weather. After exploring a few of the islands on Ullswater we welcomed the sight and warmth of the sun as it peered up from behind Place fell, this also meant it was time for a spot of abseiling. Some of the team building group had worked at height in the past and so found the abseiling straight forward, however some had not which made their experience quite entertaining for the others. Whilst all this was happening by the lake the other half of the team building group were hiking up towards Glenridding Dodd and Sheffield pike where they experienced panoramic views of Ullswater and the eastern fells of Cumbria and the Lake District. The weather was stunning and the guys had fantastic conditions for the time of year.
Overall the team building day was a brilliant success and everyone had a great experience. It was a pleasure to be out with a group who clearly enjoyed being active in the outdoors. The banter was constant all day and we were able to take some fantastic pictures of their team building day which can be viewed here.
"I would just like to express our thanks for a fantastic day last Saturday. After a day of exercise and fun, every one commented on how they enjoyed their selves and how professional everything was organised."
