Ullswater Litter Pick Day

Distant Horizons have been organising and involved in various litter picks in the Ullswater valley over the past few years in a bid to make it a cleaner place to live and visit.  It can be very frustrating seeing litter collect on the beaches and in the trees on the beautiful Ullswater shoreline and because of our appreciation of the area and the fact that we use it, and may unwittingly be a small part of the problem by encouraging people to visit the area, we think it is important to do our bit.

Where does it come from?

Adventure stag do weekend in the Lake District

5 Aug 2014 - Emma

On all or stag party events we throw ourselves into whatever weird and colourful activities each group of lads want.  Unlike Hen parties, where we are slightly more delicate and forgiving (at times), stag parties always tend to get a healthy dose of ‘Man up pills’ and ‘Attitude adjustment lessons’ from Jason and Dan.  So when one particular group of enthusiastic gents approached us about having a wilderness camping experience we happily said, ‘YES’.

Pond Life at Distant Horizons

17 Jul 2014 - Emma

Not only is Distant Horizons surrounded by 30 acres of meadows and woodland, teeming with wildlife, but is now in the process of gaining a pond.

The hole is dug and now all it needs is a bit of liquid sunshine, but we can manage without that for a few months yet.  The pond is roughly 60m x 40m and 5ft deep and once established nature will be encouraged to take over, and we hope to see a host of insects and pond life including butterflies and dragon flies.

200 native trees will be planted around the pond and surrounding meadow…

Need some team building ideas?

Team building is a diverse subject but essentially it is about a group of people having a shared experience, for fun or development.  Although having fun is a key component of what we do we focus on using the outdoors as a tool for development, and we feel that for a team to truly realise their potential they must leave the comfort zone and try the unknown.  So, in short here are our 4 main ideas for creating an effective developmental team building experience.

Challenging Activities

The first of our team building…

Work experience at Distant Horizons

18 Apr 2014 - Emma

Here is an account of life at Distant Horizons by our recent work experience placement:

I have found my time at Distant Horizons really beneficial regarding my understanding of how an outdoor centre works, from doing maintenance to canoe sessions on the lake and also how an event is ran and planned out.

I have enjoyed my work experience with Distant Horizons as it has been a good laugh but also a learning processes at the same time. I have learned a range of things including tying knots and the importance of looking…

Lake District rainy days

10 Apr 2014 - Emma

The clue is in the name so yes the ‘Lake District’ does experience rainy days, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay cooped up in your tent or hotel.  Rainy days in the Lake District just encourage you to think outside the box and we are here to help.

If you still want to get into the outdoors don’t let the rainy days stop you, gorge walking (or Gyhll scrambling or canyoning) is the perfect activity…
