Challenge Event - FAQ
We offer a wide range of established challenge events and in addition we have designed our own events including The 3 Lakes Challenge, The Edge to Edge Challenge and The 25 Peak Mountain Challenge to name a few, and these are aimed at groups of people, companies and organisations looking for an opportunity to experience and try something different.
1. What activity challenge event do we undertake and why?
If you are organising an event for a group of people, establish what is the main driver for undertaking such a challenge. It could be an opportunity to simply get to know people better in a different arena from the work place, it could be to bring people together and form a better understanding of each other from the challenging experience or it could be to raise money for a good cause. Whatever the driver it is worth considering what people within the group have done before and liked or disliked and the reasons why?
It is worth considering the physical ability of the group as not everyone will be at the same fitness level. Many people opt for walking challenges as this as seen as non-technical, but rest assured walking on Scafell Pike in the dark in bad visibility, driving rain and wind is certainly very technical when undertaking the National 3 Peaks.
It is worth looking at a range of challenges including multi-activity as they can offer something different and very much within people's technical ability and fitness levels yet still offering a very challenging adventure experience. At Distant Horizons we offer a wide range of challenge events with something suitable for any group of any ability. We have the ability to adapt and change any challenge we offer to meet with our client's requirements.
2. How fit do I need to be?
Fitness is very important for any challenge event as it helps us perform physically and the fitter you are then the better you will probably perform. Fitness is more than just getting the heart rate up a few times a week for 20 minutes or so! An important factor worth considering is that the more flexible you are then you are less likely to suffer with tweaks, twists and strains. Many people who are fit but not flexible perform well but suffer with stiffness very soon after activity. You do not need to be an athlete but we strongly suggest that if you wish to take on a specific challenge then ask us about our recommened fitness plans that we provide and we can also offer advice of the level of fitness we think you should have for one of our challenges.
3. Do I need prior experience of the activities?
Having any sort of experience in the specific discipline you are to participate in would be very useful but not essential. Obviously if you are undertaking a bike challenge it is imperative you can ride a bike before you turn up but for our canoe and kayak challenges we do offer a training session the evening before your event covering all essential techniques from expert instructors.
4. What clothing and equipment do I need to have or buy?
Distant Horizons offer events where you do not need to go out and buy any expensive clothing and equipment. Many other challenge providers will not provide you with anything so yes you will have to go and buy waterproofs, boots, fleeces etc but we provide everything you need included as part of our fees.
5. I had an injury not so long ago - will this be a problem during a challenge event?
It depends on what it is and what challenge you are looking to participate in. We are not doctors but can advise on the physical input required and the flexibilty you would need to do a particular activity. A doctor is the person to consult regarding your injury and their professional opinion should be adopted.
6. How safe will I be?
Adventurous activities by their very nature carry an element of risk. If we remove that risk then they are no longer adventurous! If they are no longer adventurous then the challenge element is likely to be removed also and it may not be worth undertaking the event as it does not offer the required level of 'the unknown'.
7. How much experience does Distant Horizons have in running challenge events?
8. Are we insured when we participate in a Distant Horizons challenge event?
9. Are Distant Horizons staff qualified and experienced?
10. What safety measures are in place from Distant Horizons for each event?
